James River's Huge Blue Catfish Going Crazy
By BILL COCHRAN
Fishing for blue catfish in the James River has been so outstanding, maybe
the best in the country. Here are examples of recent success stories:
Mike Walker of Highland Spring landed five big cats totaling 160 pounds.
The weights were 50, 34, 32 and 28 pounds. Walker was fishing with guide
Dwayne Snyder at Fin and Skin Shop in Varina.
One of the largest recent catches was a blue that weighed 66 pounds, 4
ounces, taken by Wayne Gray of Virginia Beach. Gray also landed fish that
weighed 47 pounds, 8 ounces, 41 pounds and 29 pounds.
Tommy Sell of Roanoke had three blue catfish that weighed 50 pounds, 6
ounces, 40 and 37 pounds.
Big fish also are being weighed at the Castaway Sporting Goods in Dutch
Gap and others are being reported by guide Mike Ostrander at the James
River Fishing School.
Some attention recently has been switched to shad fishing in the Richmond
area.
